Why Server-Side Rendering Still Matters for SEO in a JavaScript-Heavy Web

There’s a question that keeps surfacing in SEO and development circles: does Google actually need you to server-side render your pages, or can it handle JavaScript just fine on its own?

Google has been pretty direct about this. Yes, it can render JavaScript – but that doesn’t mean you should lean on it as your default SEO strategy. The deprecation notice around dynamic rendering spells it out:

“Dynamic rendering was a workaround and not a long-term solution for problems with JavaScript-generated content in search engines. Instead, we recommend that you use server-side rendering, static rendering, or hydration as a solution.”

That’s not subtle. Google is telling you to put your content in the HTML. Don’t make them work for it.

The Core Issue: Initial HTML vs JavaScript Rendering

When we talk about “initial HTML,” we mean the raw markup the server sends back before a single line of JavaScript runs. This is what Googlebot encounters first – and sometimes, it’s all Googlebot bothers with.

Google’s Web Rendering Service (WRS) does execute JavaScript, but it comes with real constraints that a lot of developers overlook:

Think about what that means in practice. If your page pulls content from an API after load, or relies on session data to decide what to display, Google’s renderer might never encounter that content. It starts fresh every single time. No cookies, no local storage, no carryover from prior visits.

Rendering Is Possible – But Not Guaranteed

This point gets misunderstood a lot, so I want to be precise. Google isn’t saying it can’t render JavaScript. It absolutely can. But rendering at scale across billions of pages is expensive, and Google has to prioritise where it spends those resources.

A few realities worth keeping in mind:

  • Rendering burns compute that crawling raw HTML simply doesn’t need
  • There’s often a gap between crawling and rendering – sometimes days, not hours
  • Pages on sites with limited crawl budget may never get fully rendered at all

So if your product descriptions, your internal navigation links, or your structured data only materialise after JavaScript executes, you’re placing a bet on a process that Google itself describes as resource-constrained. That’s a gamble I wouldn’t take with pages that drive revenue.

HTML Structure Still Matters

There’s another dimension to this that’s easy to miss. Even when Google does render your page, the structure of your HTML plays a role:

“Order matters: Place your most critical elements – like meta tags, <title>, <link>, canonicals, and essential structured data – higher up in the HTML document. This ensures they are unlikely to be found below the cutoff.”

If your title tags, canonical URLs, or schema markup only appear once JavaScript finishes executing, they may not get picked up reliably. This isn’t a theoretical worry – Google is explicitly flagging it as a real consideration for how you build your pages.

The Recommended Approach

So what should you actually do? Google’s own guidance points to three paths:

Server-side rendering (SSR) delivers fully formed HTML on the first request. All the content is there before any JavaScript loads. From a search visibility standpoint, this removes ambiguity entirely.

Static site generation (SSG) pre-builds pages at deploy time. You end up with plain HTML files that are about as crawler-friendly as anything can get. For content that doesn’t change every few minutes, it’s tough to argue against this approach.

Hydration lets you have it both ways – server-rendered HTML for crawlers and that first page load, with JavaScript stepping in afterward to handle interactivity. Frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt, and SvelteKit are all built around this idea, which is probably why they’ve become the default choice for teams that care about both UX and SEO.

Bottom Line

Google can render JavaScript. That part of the conversation is settled. The real question is whether you want your search visibility to depend on a process that’s resource-intensive, potentially delayed, and not guaranteed to complete.

For anything that matters to your rankings – your main content, your internal links, your metadata, your structured data – get it into the initial HTML. That’s not just a best practice. It’s what Google is explicitly telling you to do.
